In the early 1980's on the historic Barbary Coast
of North Queensland, in a small ramshackle street bursting with pubs a
band was born: it was named Johno's Blues Band. During the
80's this street gradually disappeared but Johnos Blues Band continued
to develop and grow from strength to strength.
Many of Johno's songs relate to life in North Queensland and originally the music provided entertainment for the crocodile shooters, pearl smugglers & frontier men who once abounded in Cairns. |
| Today Johno's Blues Band
is the house band at the legendary Johnos Blues Club in Cairns on the Great
Barrier Reef, Australia.Johno has led the band at the club for over 10
years and while remaining a favourite of the locals he has also become
very popular with overseas tourists. The large Japanese community in Cairns
are enthralled by hisshock of blonde hair, Indian Headdress and unique
style of blues.
Almost as famous as the band itself is Johno's feathered headdress. He is rarely seen without his native American garb which he inherited from a distant uncle, who was a great American chief in his time. Apart from the flamboyant Johno, there is Ric
Montgomery on guitars, Geoff Brown on Bass &
Dan Solowiej on drums.

A household name around North Queensland, Johno's
songs can often be heard resonating from the speakers of a stereo system.
Unusually, for a blues Band, commercial radio has embraced them & regularly
plays their music. Johno's music is also extremely popular in the film
industry & features in a number of documentaries about Australia &
its crocodiles.
Johno's Blues Band has made a great impression on the international live music scene, touring extensively throughout America & Europe and recording on various labels such as Warner Brothers. Johno himself has performed with all the 'greats' from Junior Wells to Albert King. |
